Rabbi Michael Stanger

Rabbi Stanger was born in Brooklyn New York to a loving, supportive and "Jewishly aware" family. He attended Midwood High School and graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Fine Arts; majoring in English and American Literature and minoring in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies.  A spring semester at Tel Aviv University, where he went on a side trip to Poland for the March of the Living, first brought forth the desire to explore further Jewish studies after graduation and a consideration to pursue work in the Jewish community.  Rabbi Stanger enrolled in the Jewish Theological Seminary a year after college where he was a recipient of the Kepes Fellowship, a special honor awarded to two students a year which paid for school and offered a financial stipend for their studies. While a student he served briefly as a Chaplain in the United States Navy and Coast Guard and was a CLAL intern (a consortium of clergy and Jewish leaders from across the denominational board) as well as teaching, tutoring and engaging in both Intra-religious and Inter-religious activities. He was ordained from the Seminary in May of 2001 with Rabbinical ordination and an M.A. in Jewish Education.  Rabbi Stanger first served as Assistant Rabbi at the Westchester Jewish Center, located in Mamaroneck, New York and since August of 2006 has served as the Rabbi of the Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation. In addition to the numerous duties he fulfills in pastoral counseling, leading services, life cycles events and sermonizing, Rabbi Stanger is very much involved with Jewish education both for adults and children, and with his spare time has pursued an interest in interfaith work and activities. And in addition to being a member of RANS (the Rabbinical Assembly of Nassau/Suffolk) and the New York Board of Rabbis, Rabbi Stanger is currently a fellow with LHREI (the Legacy Heritage Rabbinic Enrichment Initiative). Both Rabbi Stanger, his wife Sandi, and his children Arielle and Noah love living in the community here in Old Westbury and are thrilled to be surrounded by so many Yankees fans!
