An Open Letter to Potential New Members

Whether you are a new resident to Nassau County or merely trading residence from one area of Long Island to another, we extend a warm welcome and invitation to learn about Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation. Our invitation extends to members of all religious denominations who have chosen to settle here on Long Island.

As a major Long Island institution, we would like to introduce ourselves to those of you who are of the Jewish faith. OWHC offers a magnificent, newly renovated space which includes a beautiful sanctuary for prayer, reflection and celebration, along with a welcoming and growing community that is led by a dynamic Rabbi and Israeli Cantor.  We offer a wide range of programs and classes serving congregants of all ages.

Our Rabbi Michael Stanger is sensitive to congregants needs. The Rabbi has the ability to put people at ease which allows congregants to experience life cycle events; births, baby namings’, bar/bat mitzvot, and weddings in joyous ways as well as more difficult times in your life. Our Cantor Yossi Karavani brings a wonderful sense of joy to our services through his beautiful voice and unique melodies, which elevates our services by inviting participation through song and prayer.  Our Cantor’s musical stylings enrich our congregant’s religious experience.

Both our Nursery School and Religious School have an outstanding reputation and educational programs. They are led by two professional certified educators. The Early Childhood Director of our Nursery School embraces the Synagogue’s mission. The goal of our nursery school is to integrate the secular and Judaic aspects of life into our curriculum, while providing a supportive environment through which children may pursue their curiosity and develop their social interactions.  Our Director of our Religious School has brought both innovation and excitement to the process of after school learning. She has a deep commitment to educating and a friendly educational environment for children of diverse backgrounds and level of ability. Ms. Innerfield follows the philosophy that for a child to develop a solid Jewish identity experiential education, hands-on involvement, through family education programs & activities, holiday experiences, field trips, art, music, mitzvot, tefillah, Junior Congregation and Youth Group.

When the time arrives for Bar and Bat Mitzvah training, our Rabbi and Cantor work closely with each family to properly prepare for them this milestone event, ensuring that this passage into Jewish adulthood is a truly special and befitting commemoration. We are a small enough community that there is only one Bar/Bat Mitzvah child for each service.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Warmly and always with Shalom (peace)

Pam Barnett
